Moving to another city within the same town is difficult. Moving to another state is very hard. Moving to an island requires serious planning. There is a different checklist you have to abide by. Everything is going via the sea and requires more handling than just driving down the street.
Have you tried packing with a time nerd? If not, let me tell you, there's no room for breathing as you are constantly on a schedule or having everything ready early. The most redundant question you hear "have you checked when do we ship, what can we ship?...".
Post our Zenification phase of our material things, there was still the unknown of "what do we really need to bring?" We didn't need ALL of our house on the mainland to go. During the gathering of our essential items, at some point, we realized that we had some items that wouldn't fit into the totes. No matter how much pushing and cramming into the containers. I looked at Mr clock and said "Houston we have a....?!?"The solution...in sight. I was handed a list of items for me to get at Home Depot in less than five minutes. Let's just say I felt as if I were in a game show and had to get supplies and load it into the car before the buzzer.
I loaded the materials into my convertible aka Blue Torpedo. Glad it wasn't raining that day. Rushed back home to build a box.
Twenty minutes later we built a custom box to the specs of the freight company. Transportation by sea exposes the goods through several handlings of multiple middle-man companies. There are no "guidelines" to bend. If you pack wrong your goods are going to be thrown around and ruined.
Companies pay $.10 per pound for collateral damages. Which means if you have a diamond of 20 carats, you will get peanuts in return.
The box came out right with a little extra space to place small things.
My time nerd drives me crazy at times but you have to love a man that never answers "I don't know what to do..."
There are a few different directions one can chose to get their goods to Hawaii, most prefer to rent a shipping container. We didn't need that much space! Well I haven't packed my shoes yet...too late.
We chose to an option of "LTC" Less Than Container load. You put your bags, totes, boxes onto a pre-sized pallet and it is shrink wrapped and put into a shared container. Much like Uber share ride. Once your belongings are navigating the sea, it’s just a waiting game to when it docks.
